Set behind the imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle, Helmsley Walled Garden is an incredibly special restorative place with an inspirational back story.
Dating back over 250 years, there has been a walled garden here since 1758 when it was used as a kitchen garden for the Feversham family of Duncombe Park. As well as native flowers, fruit and veg innovative horticulturalists built Glasshouses to grow more exotic fruit such as figs, vines and peaches which the family had sent by rail to their house in Belgravia.
Following the First World War the garden was leased as a commercial enterprise, with the last leaseholder retiring in 1984 when the garden sadly was forgotten and became derelict. However in the 1990s gardener Alison Ticehurst had a vision of bringing the garden back to life. With nothing more than a big idea and a loyal group of family and friends she transformed the garden from a desolate wilderness to the thriving space it is today.
