Introducing the latest addition to the Helmsley Food & Drink scene – U Tagghiu Anticu is a gorgeous little 1800s style traditional Italian café/bar set by the river on Bridge Street.
The brainchild of the fabulous Salvatore Giacalone and his partner Claudia, this small but perfectly formed venue offers delicious Aperitivo style sharing plates alongside great coffee and very cool cocktails. A relaxed table service guarantees you’ll feel well looked after from the moment you arrive.
The Food
If you’ve been lucky enough to visit Sicily you’ll be familiar with wonderful Aperitivo culture there; the serving of pre-dinner sharing plates of charcuterie and cheeses along with a drink or two to wet the appetite before your main meal.
This tradition has now arrived in North Yorkshire! The sharing plates on offer at U Tagghiu Anticu include lots of mouth-watering meats and cheeses, perfect for nibbling on while you enjoy a good glass of wine. Choose from the Italian antipasti selection with olives or perhaps a plate of creamy Burrata or fresh salmon with crusty bread. What’s not to love?!
The Coffee
Something of a religion for Italians, coffee is an integral part of life. A good cup of coffee is everything! Salvatore serves Caffe Vergnano coffee here, a company with a heritage back to 1882 where they began roasting coffee in Turin.
You’ll also find their rich and creamy hot chocolate, made the traditional Italian way… The perfect comfort drink on a cold January afternoon.
The Drinks
Salvatore is a master mixologist and speciality cocktails are a huge part of what makes U Tagghiu Anticu unique. There are lots of original cocktails and mocktails to choose from, each one lovingly crafted while you watch.

The Details
U Tagghiu Anticu is open most days from mid afternoon until late. As the venue is quite small, booking for tables is recommended although walk-ins are more than welcome too.
In the summer months a table in the gardens overlooking the river is simply heaven!
